Sloper Wesoly House Fall

   Sloper Wesoly House

This Queen Anne style house retains an extraordinary degree of authenticity inside and out The Boston architect, George Dutton Rand, designed the building for Andrew Jackson Sloper, a prominent industrialist and banker in New Britain. The house was completed in 1887. The hipped roof has two cross gables, and a rounded tower with a conical roof stands at one comer of the facade. A one-story front entry porch with a gable roof shelters the front door. Brownstone trims the brick exterior and wood fishscale shingles decorate the gables. Inside almost nothing has been altered since the house was built, except for limited updating of the kitchen and bathrooms.

Intact decorative features abound including varnished oak paneling, stained glass, elaborate spool work, tiled fireplaces, terra cotta medallions, and original hardware. The library has built-in wood and glass bookcases, and the dining room has a built-in sideboard. The house has a relatively open circulation pattern radiating from the large central hall, with a staircase. Mature plantings enhance the three-quarter acre lot. The building is individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Until the 1970s the neighborhood consisted of large Victorian residences in both wood and brick. Now the area contains mostly commercial and institutional uses. Route 72, a major highway, runs nearby.
